Allison of Goldie Blossoms
What inspired you to start working in the wedding industry?
I became interested in the floral world during my short stint in Austin, Texas. The florists and flower farmers there were so talented, always creating such beautiful arrangements. I followed them for a while, dreaming of doing something similar. It wasn't until a few years later when I moved back to Michigan due to the pandemic, that I started working with flowers. With plenty of free time, I began growing my own flowers and eventually started designing with them. I always thought I wanted to just farm flowers because the wedding industry is quite intimidating! However, when a local event florist (shoutout to Lee Floral Design!!) was in need of an assistant, I reached out. I started working with her that following season and realized that I loved helping Brandi bring her client's visions to life and create beautiful, memorable experiences for them. I soon realized I wanted to book and design for my own clients, so the following year I dove into the wedding industry head-on!
How long have you been working as a florist?
I've been designing for weddings and events for about 2 years now, but I've been working with flowers since 2020!
Do you grow most of the flowers you use for floral arrangements?
One day I hope to be able to design weddings with all my own flowers, however, I don't have enough land to grow all the flowers I need. Luckily, there are plenty of great flower farmers around where I can get all the locally-grown flowers I want. I do have to source some flowers from the wholesaler since there are some flowers we can't get locally or they're not in season in Michigan.
How far in advance do you recommend couples book their florist?
My clients typically book about 9-12 months in advance. In my opinion, though there's no set time frame. You should have some information set before reaching out, such as a set date and venue, as well as an estimated guest count and an idea of the amount of tables you'll have at your reception. This allows us to create an accurate quote for you so you know what to expect. If you have a florist you know for sure you want to work with, I do think it's important for you to reach out ASAP to secure a spot with them!
What is the average floral budget for weddings for couples preparing for an upcoming wedding?
This year, the average budget we're working with is about $4,500. But ultimately, it's all up to you and what you're comfortable spending! I always aim to recommend cost-effective designs that pack a visual punch, so couples can achieve the look and feel they desire. I don't think you should feel pressured to spend a certain amount just because that's what other people are spending.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve received since working as a wedding florist?
Don't overanalyze your designs and trust yourself. Clients choose you for your unique style, so when you overthink, you end up wasting time and straying from what makes you stand out!
What trends are you looking forward to for 2024 and 2025 weddings?
I'm loving that my clients are going with fun color palettes. I have a couple of weddings lined up with soft pastel hues that I'm really looking forward to. They're also going for a garden party style, which I'm incredibly excited about! This allows me to primarily use locally-grown flowers, which is the ultimate goal! The growing popularity of abstract arrangements is also really exciting to me. It's a refreshing change from the more traditional floral styles. Incorporating fun elements like hanging amaranthus, foliage, and produce truly adds a unique touch to weddings. It's a great way to have your wedding stand out.
What trends would you like to see more of in the wedding space?
I would really like to see more weddings featuring just one type of flower (preferably one in season and locally-grown)! It's a unique take on a classic idea that can create a cohesive and visually stunning wedding. You can create magic when you showcase one flower. Picture a wedding featuring locally-grown dahlias. An arch filled with dahlias, centerpieces with different colored dahlias, bud vases lining the tables to give that whimsy element, a statement table runner of dahlias along the head table. Opting for locally-grown flowers adds a touch of authenticity and sustainability to the wedding. By using flowers that are in season and readily available, couples can reduce their carbon footprint and create a more eco-friendly event. Not to mention - the quality of the flowers will be amazing!
Another trend I've been waiting to see more of is petite bridal bouquets. It's a trend that I can't get enough of! It's perfect for brides who want a more understated and minimalist aesthetic. The fact that they're easier to handle is an added bonus! I just think there's something so delicate and dainty about them, they're like the perfect accessory.
What’s inspiring you lately? This can be in life in your designs, or both.
The change of seasons always inspires me. When certain flowers come back into season, it motivates me to create new designs with them. I love that each season has its own charm and characteristics. For example, when I think of spring designs, I think of gentle, delicate flowers dancing in the wind. I get inspired by my garden when it's in full bloom as well! Sometimes I happen to plant two colors side by side that complement each other perfectly that I have to design with them together. It's easy to get inspired by the way everything grows together! I also enjoy checking out what other florists are doing. It's easy to get caught up in using the same colors or flowers over and over again, so it's nice to see what other designers are experimenting with.
What’s one of the biggest highlights in your career so far?
I have to say, the most exciting moment in my career has been successfully finishing my first year on my own! It was such a big leap of faith to start my own business, and I'm really proud of myself for pushing through. I'm super excited to see what this year brings, I have some amazing weddings lined up!
Are there any vendors you’d like to work with in the future or people you find inspiring?
There are a couple of florists I would love to work with in the future. Winsome Floral always creates the most beautiful and delicate designs. The Farmer and I has that locally-grown, garden-inspired design that I love so much. Ashley Fox Designs designs these stunning tablescapes, I'd love to learn from her one day!
Do you have a favorite color palette you enjoy working in with floral?
I LOVE anything with color. Last year, my favorite was this moody color palette featuring white, pale pink, and mauve. The colors worked so well together and created a soft and elegant look. I am also a fan of the bold and vibrant colors you typically find in the summer. Bright pinks and oranges can really add a fun touch to your wedding day! While I still appreciate the classic all-white look, I believe using color, even if it's a hint of it, can enhance a wedding.
